Brian Rast leads the field to Day 2.
Brian Rast leads the field to Day 2.

After a full year in the making Day 1 of the WSOP National Championship has come to a close. Almost all of the 100 WSOPC qualifiers showed up to play and 57 WSOP POY qualifiers forked over the $10,000 entrance fee to play. Leading the remaining 39 players is Brian Rast with 248,000.

On Rast’s heels are Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (231,500) and Matt Keikoan (228,500). Notables David “ODB” Baker, Eugene Katchalov, Sam Stein, Fabrice Soulier, Chris Tryba and Chris Moorman still remain.

WSOPC standouts Drazen Ilich, Aaron Massey, Amanda Musumeci, Ryan Eriquezzo, Chris Conrad, Jamie Kerstetter, Huy Nguyen and Jacob Naquin remain in the field. Only two WSOPC Main Event champions remain – Eriquezzo and Jerry Monroe.

A total of 19 tables began play and eliminations were swift throughout the day. By the dinner break that number had been halved and by night’s end only five tables remained.

Plenty of notables that paid $10,000 did not survive the day including; Michael Mizrachi, Tristan Wade, David “Doc” Sands, Jeffrey Papola, Pius Heinz, Christian Harder, John Racener, Matt Glantz, Allen Bari and Phil Hellmuth.

Some of the WSOPC qualifiers that didn’t survive the day included; Freddy Deeb, Alex Masek, Kurt Jewell, Tripp Kirk, Kyle Cartwright, AP Phahurat, Tuan Phan, Drew Dumanski, Daniel Lowery, Raj Kattamuri, Charles Moore and Jennifer Parrish.

The structure has been kept the same as WSOPC Main Events with 40-minute levels on Day 1 and levels bump up to 60 minutes during Day 2. The third and final day of play will have 75-minute levels.

Day 2 will resume at 1 p.m. PST in the Gold Section of the Brasilia Room. The field will play down to a final table of eight players. Follow all the WSOP National Championship action live on

Mercier Busts On Last Hand Of Night

Jason Mercier open shipped from early position for his last 35,000, and it folded around to Mark Bonsack, who instantly made the call.

Bonsack: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}
Mercier: {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Of course no matter how far ahead you are, it's never easy to bust Mercier. The flop came down {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}, giving Mercier a jack for a straight to win the pot. The {9-Clubs} hit the turn, giving Mercier additional flush draw outs. But it all missed, as the {10-Diamonds} hit the river. Mercier quickly made his exit, as he was off to finish the last two levels of the 2-7 event. There will be no Day 2 for Mercier. #justbadluck

Keikoan Catches Trips, Busts LeFrancois

Action started with Matt Keikoan raising to 5,100. Pascal LeFrancois then moved all in for 15,800 from the small blind, and when it got back to Keikoan, he tossed in the call.

Keikoan: {k-Spades}{j-Hearts}
LeFrancois: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

The suspense was over pretty quickly as the flop came down {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{7-Spades}. No miracles would come for LeFrancois, as the {9-Hearts} hit the turn. The meaningless river was the {9-Spades}, and Keikoan collected the bounty.

Kerstetter Doubles Through Turner, Who Then Busts

Jon Turner- Busto
Jon Turner- Busto

Action started with an early position player raising it to 6,600. Two players called, including Jon "Pearljammer" Turner. It folded all the way around to Jamie Kerstetter in the small blind, and she shipped it all in for 46,500. The frist two players folded, but Turner made the call.

Kerstetter: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
Turner: {4-Clubs}{4-Spades}

Any miracle that Turner could hope for went virtually out the door when the flop came {6-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{a-Hearts}. Turner would need runner runner to win, but the turn came the {10-Diamonds}. The meaningless river was the {j-Diamonds}, and Kerstetter secured the double up to 101,000.

A few hands later, Turner got it all in preflop with {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds} against the {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} of Chris Moorman. The flop was a disaster for Turner, coming {2-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Spades}. Turner was all but dead, and he was officially drawing dead when the {3-Hearts} hit the turn. The meaningless river was the {8-Clubs}, and Turner was sent packing, while Moorman jumped up to 73,000.
